Message from the Chair

There is no question our area is growing.

In fact, the region’s population will double to 10 million people by 2040. Our unprecedented growth and the strength of our diversity continue to propel us forward. Progress never slows, and METRO is up to the challenge.

Our transportation network includes 107 local bus routes, three light rail lines, 27 Park & Ride lots, and approximately 100 miles of HOV/HOT lanes. We also provide vanpool services and METROLift, our paratransit service. We provide more than 116,000,000 trips per year, making METRO the largest transit agency in Texas.

We help keep our region moving, but it’s time to plan for the future.

METRO is embarking on the creation of a Regional Transit Plan designed to build on past successes, examine what works now and prepare us for the future. We are calling this planning process "METRONext" and it will explore potential investments in various types of transit that will connect more people to more places. The efficient movement of goods, services and people is critical to a strong economy. This is why we all should be concerned about the transportation challenges in our region and work together to address them.

We need your help.

Over the next several months, we will be reaching out to you through public meetings, social media, online meetings and more to find out your vision for tomorrow’s transit. You will have a wide range of options to participate in this effort. This website will serve as a great resource as you help us think ahead. I encourage you to get involved—and encourage others to get involved too. With your help, we can build a plan that keeps people moving and our economy strong for decades to come.

Thank you for your consideration.

Sincerely,

Carrin Patman
Chair of the Board
Metropolitan Transit Authority of Harris County, TX
